Needle Tester of Bee Colonies for Hygienic Behaviuor
The needle tester is designed to simplify the testing of bee colonies for hygienic behaviour by piercing bee brood.
The tester has fifty thin (0.38 mm) stainless steel needles with the length of 12 mm, which allows simultaneous piercing of 50 cells on a frame with a bee brood of a certain age. This significantly reduces testing time, especially when there are ten or more families to be tested by the breeder. The tester handle is made of enduring and detergent-resistant polyurethane.
There are different types of beeswax foundation for bee brood, so the distance between the needles on the tester must be different to be on target. We have developed three options with different distances between the needles, depending on the basic beeswax foundation size used by the breeder: 5.0 mm; 5.2 mm; 5.4 mm.
To choose the appropriate tester you should make simple measurements of the beeswax foundation you use in your apiary. Take a usual ruler or a more accurate device to measure the length of 20 cells on your foundation from the beginning of the first cell to the end of the last one, as shown in the figure.
Then divide the result by 20 and get the diameter of your cell according to which you can already choose the size of the tester for hygiene. If, for example, you have 5.3 mm, then you have 2 options (5.2 or 5.4), and if you you have 5.1, you can take either 5.0 or 5.2.
